Ένα γράμμα οδηγεί τον Ηρακλή Πουαρό και τον Λοχαγό Χέιστινγκς στην αγγλική ύπαιθρο. Πρόκειται για τον νεαρό ευγενή, τον Τζόνι Γουέβερλι, και τη πλούσια σύζυγό του, που έχουν τρομοκρατηθεί από ένα γράμμα που τους προειδοποιεί για την επικείμενη απαγωγή του μικρού τους γιού.
